OUR YOUTH PROGRAM
Endurance for Kids Runners
Endurance for Kids is a new project by AKRC recognizing the need to help city kids become more physically active. The goal of all our youth programs is to equip children with the tools they need to become physically fit for life, in programs that focus on goal-setting skills, character-enrichment, and nutrition education.
Our goal is to have more than 500 Endurance for Kids runners log miles in most local running events held throughout the year. Supported by AKRC Elite coaches, Endurance for Kids alumni mentors, and friendly Endurance for Kids staff members, these generous athletes enjoy special race-day perks and personalized training plans. Endurance for Kids has multiple rewards. There’s the pleasure of raising funds for a truly worthy cause. There is the unique camaraderie, on and off the course, which comes from having trained together for several months. And finally, there is the amazing feeling of being in a long race and running past cheering stations full of enthusiastic kids who know you are running for them.

Where does the money go?
All funds raised through Endurance for Kids benefit Alaska Runners Club youth services, which represent a Local and State effort to transform the lives of tens of thousands of children, many of whom have no access to the regular physical activity they need to live healthy, productive lives.
The primary AKRC youth services
Young Runners and Mighty Milers — are running-based programs that promote children’s physical fitness, character development, personal achievement, and teamwork in underserved communities in our local cities, and throughout the State of Alaska. Funds raised by Endurance for Kids members help provide:
- Training for teachers, coaches, field managers, and coordinators, most of whom volunteer their time to AKRC youth services.
- Incentives for children to encourage them to attend events and practices, demonstrate sportsmanship, and strive for fitness and personal milestones.
- Incentives for teachers to encourage them to run with students, and enable them to share their own achievements in physical fitness through AKRC youth programs.
- Entry fees and transportation to races and related sporting events for the kids.
- Necessary resources to establish programs in areas of greatest need.
AKRC Youth Running Series
We’re thrilled to launch the AKRC Youth Running Series in the near future, a brand-new initiative designed just for middle school kids (grades 6-8) with events throughout the school year! This three-season program includes cross country, indoor track, and road running, and because the races feature kid-friendly distances ranging from three-quarters of a mile to two miles, they’re perfect for youngsters of all fitness levels. Kids run with their age and gender group, and all races are timed and scored.
The series continues with five awesome track and field meets. (Please note that we recommend that kids who register for these events have some track running experience.)
AKRC deeply appreciates the generosity of the donors who have supplied the seed funding for this new program, which will provide running events year-round for kids in Alaska.
